PR TOOL FOR DIGITAL STIMULATION
A Per Rectal (PR) tool to help those with limited hand function perform manual bowel stimulation independently.
This method works best sitting on a commode or an over toilet chair.
This tool can be used before an enema as a digital stimulation technique and also after a result to ensure bowel has been properly emptied.
- Place tool into a clean glove so the pointed end sits within one of the finger sleeves
- Lubricate the pointed end sufficiently
- Hold the T end between fingers or however works best for your individual grip
- Bring pointed end to the anus and insert 2-4 cm inside the rectum
- Gently rotate the tool in a circular motion against the rectal wall for approximately 10-20 seconds
- When the faeces start to move, apply a gentle stretch to the external anal sphincter, to enable the easy passage of faeces
- Remove tool, take the glove off using a baby wipe and dispose
- Repeat process if required
- If no stool present: withdraw finger and await ‘reflex evacuation’. Await 5-10 minutes between stimulation and perform no more than 3 times.
- Care should be taken to avoid damage to the rectal mucosa and overstretching of the internal and external anal sphincters
PLEASE NOTE: If using with very limited/no sensation of the anus, it is advised to practice with a support person first.
Rough or incorrect use of product could result in injury, perforation, bleeding and/or haemorrhoids.
- Best used on a commode: use the cut out side of the commode to reach your hand around to the anus
- Always insert into a disposable glove to maintain hygiene
- Wash thoroughly after each use with soap and water
